In my over three decades of experience as a franchise consultant, there are a number of questions I am frequently asked about franchising your business.

Here is one of the most common Q&A’s:

  1. How important is my training program?
  2. At National Franchise Associates, we feel that putting together an effective training program for your Franchisees and their employees is one of the most important elements of ultimate success in franchising your business. Remember, your new Franchisee will be operating a business that shares your name.  When franchising your business, one goal is ensuring the team at the new location can represent your brand positively.  This goal starts with the Franchisee.

When franchising your business, you must determine how much training at the Franchisor’s training facility is necessary to enable the new Franchisee to operate the franchise properly.  You may divide this training into week-long sessions to allow your new Franchisee time to be at his/her location to oversee the build-out, hire key people, supervise the placement of equipment and complete other important tasks that must be accomplished during the pre-opening process.

When franchising your business, your next decision in designing your franchise training program is whether to train any Franchisee key employees.  Key employees may include a General Manager, Manager, Assistant Manager, Kitchen Manager or Head Cook, Customer Service Manager and/or Shift Leader.  Whether, when and how long to train Franchisee key employees depends upon the specific company, complexity of operation and hours of operation.  When franchising your business, if the franchise is likely to be open at times when the Franchisee is not on premises, it may be wise for the Franchisor to train the employee(s) who will be in charge during the Franchisee’s absence.

What training is needed for the Franchisee’s team members other than the key employee(s) mentioned above when franchising your business?  Often, the new Franchisee and key employees are so new to the system that they cannot adequately train the rest of the crew on their own.  When franchising your business, consider whether one or more Franchisor representatives should go to the new franchise location to help the Franchisee and managers train the remaining employees on site.
