In my over three decades of experience as a franchise consultant, there are a number of questions I am frequently asked about how to franchise your business.  Here is another one of the most common Q&A’s:

Q.  How can I make my franchise program more sellable?

A. At National Franchise Associates, we have always believed that if you focus on putting together a solid franchise offering, the money will follow. Our philosophy is to make the business arrangement a true win-win for both the Franchisor and the Franchisee.  When we receive calls from Franchisees unhappy with their Franchisors, inevitably, the Franchisee says something along the lines of “The only time I hear from the Franchisor is when they want money.”  My point is, when you structure the franchise program, make sure that it works from the perspective of your target Franchisees.  Obviously, they must make enough money to support themselves, but that amount is relative.  Some people have much more modest needs than others.  In addition, and perhaps more importantly, your Franchisees must be happy they made the decision to invest in your franchise.  When you franchise your business, you want your Franchisees to find the relationship rewarding on a financial and emotional level.  They must feel valued.  Perhaps the best advice we can give someone contemplating franchising their business is paraphrasing the advice your parents repeated when you were a child, “Treat your Franchisees as you would like to be treated.”

We at National Franchise Associates recommend that when you franchise your business, you study any competitors in the marketplace.  Learn about their franchise programs, the costs involved, their strengths and weakness, their geographic penetration and any other information you can gather.

As you franchise your business, decide how you can structure your franchise program to make it more sellable.  Build in competitive advantages to attract prospective Franchisees.

  • How is your product or service better than your competitors?
  • Can you provide more assistance to your Franchisees, such as a stronger training program or regular on-site visitations?
  • Can you lower their costs?
  • Does your business target a different market segment?
